Course Description The aim of the course is to provide a basis for the theoretical foundation of Hydraulics. Of particular interest will be the study of the flow of viscous fluids in pipes and the characterization of pressure distributions in flowing fluids or in static conditions. Simple problems of hydraulic design are analyzed with a view to applications of practical interest. The course is developed through theoretical lectures and exercise sessions with numerical examples. The specific topics of the course are as follows: Introduction: aim of the course and its organization; hydraulics and related applications. Definitions of dimensional units. Properties of fluids. Pressure and stress field in fluids. Hydrostatics: Absolute and relative pressure. Pressure variation in a fluid at rest. Pressure measurement techniques. Computation of hydrostatic force on a plane and curved surface. Integral equation of hydrostatic equilibrium. Fluid dynamics and kinematics: kinematics of fluids: definitions of trajectories, streamlines, streamtubes and discharge. Conservation laws. Ideal fluid: Bernoulli's equation and its physical interpretation. Extension to viscous fluids: head losses. Hydraulic turbomachinery: turbines and pumps. Integral equation of hydrodynamic equilibrium. Flow in pipes: Viscous flow in pipes and pipe systems. Flow regimes and hydraulic resistences in smooth and rough pipes. Concentrated and distributed head losses. Applications: General aspects, schemes and key parameters of water distribution and water drainage systems. The exam is a written test and entails both exercise and theoretical questions.
