Course Description Chemistry The module has two main aims: the first is to provide students with the methodology and fundamental concepts to study the transformations of matter (atomic and molecular structure, thermodynamic features of chemical reactions); subsequently, these basics will be applied to the study of fundamental chemical phenomena (phase diagrams, chemical equilibrium, acids and bases, electrochemical processes). The acquired knowledge is preliminary to the 'Structure, properties and applications of materials' module. In detail, the module includes the following main topics: 1. Atomic theory of matter 2. Quantum mechanics and atomic structure 3. Electron configuration and periodic table of elements 4. Chemical bond 5. Physical states of matter 6. Chemical equilibrium 7. Chemical reactions in aqueous medium 8. Thermodynamics 9. Electrochemistry The final evaluation of acquired knowledge is calculated as the weighted average of those achieved in the two modules. Each single module assessment consists in a written test (problems and questions), followed by a supplementary oral exam, upon request by the student. Materials The course aims at providing the basic knowledge for a proper selection and use of construction materials in building engineering. After an essential description of the structure and properties of the different classes of materials, the course provides the tools for selecting materials based on mechanical, physical and durability properties. In detail, the course program includes the following topics: 1. Introduction. Construction materials. Classification. Correlation between properties and structure. 2. Mechanical properties. Elastic behaviour; yield; ductile fracture and brittle fracture; toughness; role of defects. Tensile, compression and bending tests; hardness, fatigue, impact test. 3. Physical properties. Thermal, electrical and optical properties of materials. 4. Metals. 5. Binders. Portland cement. Classification of cements, types of cements, special cements. Gypsum. Lime and hydraulic lime. 6. Concrete and reinforced concrete. Durability of concrete: degradation of concrete; corrosion of reinforcement. Prevention. 7. Timber. 8. Ceramics and glasses. 9. Natural stones. 10. Polymers. The final evaluation of acquired knowledge is calculated as the weighted average of those achieved in the two modules. Each single module assessment consists in a written test (problems and questions), followed by a supplementary oral exam, upon request by the student.
