Course Description Subject of the course are the fundamentals and the description of biotechnological process. The different sections of the process will be considered (upstream, reactors, downstream) and the unit operations for each section will be critically discussed. Representative industrial process will be used to apply the fundamentals. Namely the following process will be considered: 1) process for food industry (ethanol, beer, sodium glutammate, lactic acid, citric acid, sweaters) 2) process for pharmaceutical industry (antibiotics, enzymes, vaccines) 3) process foe energy production (biofuel ethanol, biogas); 5) Enzymatic process (foods, cleaners). Foe each process the following aspects will be discussed: product use, market and costs; unit operations; microorganisms and their genetic modifications; bioreactors and instrumentation; operating parameters; separation and purification.
