Course Description The course faces the topics of modeling, simulation, control and optimization of chemical processes, coupling the theoretical aspects behind these contents with the use of modern tools, which are of interest in the process and chemical industry. Specifically, the lectures are strictly related to dedicated laboratories, where the students use software for the dynamic simulation and control of chemical plants as well as of well-established and widespread programming languages and numerical libraries commonly used in both the academic and industrial realities. The course program covers the following topics: (1) Essentials of hardware, software and information technology architecture for the control of chemical plants (DCS, data analysis); (2) development of dynamic models for unit operations and reactors and implementation for dynamic simulation; (3) essentials of chemical process control; (4) model predictive control; (5) process control for the tactical optimization of non-steady-state regime conditions (D-RTO); (6) Process control for the strategic optimization of chemical plants (production scheduling, planning); (7) examples of practical applications for each one of the abovementioned topics. In addition, every year the course offers an industrial seminar and a visit at an industrial site (i.e., refinery, biorefinery, petrochemical plant) to complement the course targets of integrating theory and practice for the industrial process dynamics and control.
