Course Description Basic concepts of statics of rigid bodies. Analysis of statically determined structures composed of 1D elements: determination of constraint reactions and internal forces. Concepts of continuum mechanics: states of stress, strain and related properties. Mechanical behaviour of materials, elastic behaviour, plastic behaviour, fatigue. Stresses in bars and beams due to axial force, bending, torsion and shear. Strength and yield criteria for fragile and ductile materials. Introductory concepts to determination of displacements and analysis of statically indeterminate structures.
