Course Description This course deals with the principles of the electromechanical conversion. At first, the magnetic circuits and the Faraday`s law are analysed, showing the physical meaning of the auto and mutual inductance parameters. Then the magnetic, conducting and isolating materials, used in the electrical machines, are studied, showing their properties. The four principal electrical machines are studied: the transformer, the d.c. machine, the induction and the synchronous ones. The approach is the same for all of them, consisting in: the description of the constitution and of the operating elementary principle; the schematisation of the magnetic field lines inside the machine, introducing the concept of main and leakage fluxes; the analysis of the interaction between the magnetic fluxes and the electrical windings, deriving the representative equations and the equivalent electrical circuit of the machine; the methods for the parameters identification. As regards each machine, some fundamental aspects are described. As for the transformer, the voltage variation from a no-load to a load condition, the vector diagram, the short circuit current and the variable-frequency operation are considered. As for the rotating electrical machines, the dependence of the torque-speed curve on the constructive parameters is analysed, showing the operating condition as a motor, a generator and a brake. Static converters, used to feed the rotating electrical machines, are analysed. Finally, some motor control methods are described.
