Course Description Introduction to microwave communication systems. Basic blocks: Antenna, Amplifier (low noise and power), Mixer, Local Oscillator. Introduction to system aspects of antennas. The radio link budget (Friis equation). Noise from Antennas and in RF front-end. Linear and non-linear distortion: definitions and characterization. Techniques for improving linearity in RF Transmitter (linearizers): pre-distortion, envelop feedback, feed-forward. Classification and characteristic parameters of microwave amplifiers, oscillators and mixers. Figure of merits of the complete RF front-end. Introduction to microwave circuits. Maindifferences with lumped-element circuits. Interconnections and their effects. Discontinuities: meaning and representation. Analysis with CAD techniques. Impedance matching circuits. Directional Couplers. Design of active microwave circuits (amplifiers, oscillators)..
