Course Description The course deals with transportation automatic systems particularly devoted to urban people transportation. After some basic concepts of power system dynamic control, the automation of electric drives is presented for metro and rail systems, with reference to the operation and the management of the service. Electric and electronic fixed installation and on board devices are presented for the system automation underlining the reliability and the safety constraints. The signaling systems and the control devices are analyzed and discussed, too. Some examples of applications are presented (electric and cable traction) referring to urban installation. A report is required where a basic project of automatic transportation system is defined starting from the needs of the service, from the chosen path and from the system constraint. The problems connected to the maintenance and the quality of the system are reported at the end of the course.
