Course Description The methods are studied for design and check of the static and rotating electrical machines. Analytical and numerical techniques are described for the basic sizing and the detailed design of components and for the evaluation of their performances, characteristic curves and related parameters. Suited sizing and check algorithms are shown, by design sheets and FEM codes. The topics are: materials (magnetic: laminations, permanent magnets; conducting: losses; standardized sizes; dielectric: classes; insulation systems); transformers (types, sizing, parameters, performances); a.c. windings (types, schemes, harmonic fields, winding factors, m.m.f. diagrams, reactances); induction machines (parasitic torques and noise, sizing, single cage and double cage sizing, parameters, performances); synchronous machines (wound field, brushless, phasor diagrams, sizing, performances, parameters); commutator machines (d.c. windings, commutation, sizing).
