Course Description The general objective of the course is that of providing to engineers of electric systems the methodological instruments and the technology knowledge for being able to design and manage the communication networks that enable the advanced and intelligent services of the smart grid. Due to the lack of a solid background in the basics of communications and networks in the students attending the course, the first part of the course is devoted to covering the fundamentals concepts behind any networked communication system with a focus on TCP/IP protocol suite used by the Internet. The second part of the course is then dedicated to the analysis of the communication needs of the smart grid and the communication technologies commonly used for electric stations, metering, SCADA, security issues, etc. The main topics covered are the following:  Introduction to communications for the Smart Grid.  Basics of communications and networks.  TCP/IP networks.  Wireless networks.  Communication infrastructures for the Smart Grid.  Access technologies for the Smart Grid.  Communications in the sub stations.  Measurement, sensors and actuators networks.  Security in the Smart Grid.
