Course Description The course aims to provide to the students the basic concepts of wet corrosion of metals. The following topics will be discussed: electrochemical wet corrosion mechanism; corrosion reactions and Faraday's Law; thermodynamic aspects, kinetic aspects and Tafel's Law; uniform corrosion, localized corrosion forms, corrosion in the presence of external stresses. Finally, prevention and corrosion control techniques will be illustrated: material selection criteria, use of coatings, cathodic protection and use of inhibitors. Each topic will be presented with classroom lectures, numerical exercises and description of practical cases. During the course, there will be a practical laboratory for measuring the potential and the corrosion rate.
