Course Description The aim of the course is to introduce basic concepts of Numerical Analysis for solving classical problems governed by PDEs in 1D. Each topic will include laboratory sessions where the students will apply the concepts explained during the lectures. The Finite Difference Method will be the subject of the first part of the course: this method will be applied to 1D elliptic, parabolic and hyperbolic problems. Such schemes will also be studied in terms of convergence, consistency and stability. Classical time-advancing schemes will be introduced as well. The second part of the course will be devoted to the Galerkin Finite Element method for 1D elliptic, parabolic and advection-diffusion equations; the numerical properties of the FEM method will be introduced.
