Course Title EXPERIMENTAL NUCLEAR REACTOR KINETICS
Course Type Mono-Disciplinary Course
Credits (CFU / ECTS) 5.0
Semester First Semester
Course Description The course (provided jointly by Politecnico di Milano and University of Pavia) is aimed at imparting theoretical and experimental knowledge of nuclear reactor kinetics by exploiting the TRIGA Mark II research reactor at the Laboratory of Applied Nuclear Energy (LENA) of the University of Pavia. In particular, this course presents a consolidated approach towards reactor analysis wherein theoretical concepts of reactor physics, dynamics and thermal-hydraulics are applied to predict the behaviour of the TRIGA reactor and its validation with the experimental data. The course (based on knowledge previously acquired in the course Fission reactor physics I) consists of a theoretical part illustrating the basic principles of nuclear reactor physics and reactor kinetics, the development of analytical and numerical models of the reactor and a description of a number of reactor kinetics experiments. The practical part of the course includes experimental sessions at LENA research facility and, when available, other research reactors, followed by analyses and discussion of the obtained results and comparison with modelling outcomes.
