Course Title PHYSICS OF NUCLEAR MATERIALS + EXPERIMENTAL NUCLEAR REACTOR KINETICS
Course Type Integrated Course
Credits (CFU / ECTS) 10.0
Semester Annual course, First Semester
Course Description The first part of the course focuses on the behaviour of irradiated materials. The objectives of the course are the analysis of the physical properties of materials employed in the nuclear field, the analysis of the effects of irradiation, and their interpretation in terms of microscopic mechanisms, and of the evolution of the microstructure. The focus is mainly on the irradiation by neutrons of metals and ceramics, as it happens in the nuclear plants. As far as the second part of the course is concerned, it is aimed at theoretical and practical education on nuclear reactor kinetics, by exploiting the TRIGA Mark II research facility. Fine calibration of a reactor control rod by means of the reactor period method. Measurement of the prompt and iso-thermal TRIGA fuel temperature coefficient. Modelling and analysis of typical reactor transients at different power levels.
