Course Title FISSION REACTOR PHYSICS II + EXPERIMENTAL NUCLEAR REACTOR KINETICS
Course Type Integrated Course
Credits (CFU / ECTS) 10.0
Semester First Semester
Course Description FISSION REACTOR PHYSICS II Objectives: Learning of the main methods for the solution of the neutron transport equation and of the foundations necessary for the use of codes of neutron transport. Contents: The Boltzmann Neutron Transport Equation. Integral and integro-differential formulation. Main solution methods. Applications. The adjoint equation. Applications. Stochastic fluctuations. The Kolmogorov and Dmitriev branching model. Application of the Monte Carlo method to the stochastic simulation of neutron and photon transport. Introduction to the analysis of random data and reactor noise. EXPERIMENTAL NUCLEAR REACTOR KINETICS The course is aimed at theoretical and practical education on nuclear reactor kinetics, by exploiting the TRIGA Mark II research facility. Fundamentals of nuclear reactor kinetics and dynamics. TRIGA Mark II research reactor: neutronic and thermo-hydraulic behaviour. Fine calibration of a reactor control rod by means of the reactor period method. Measurement of the prompt and iso-thermal TRIGA fuel temperature coefficient. Measurement of the moderator void coefficient. Evaluation of the reactor effective multiplication factor in subcritical conditions and approximate calibration of the reactor control rods. Modelling and analysis of typical reactor transients at different power levels
