Course Description The course aims at giving students the fundamentals of electronic properties of solids starting from a microscopic quantum approach. The main topics are: phenomenological properties and definition of solid materials; crystals and their symmetry; the Schroedinger equation for a crystal: Born-Oppenheimer and mean-field approximations; electronic states: free electron model, periodic potential and Bloch theorem, band structure, quasi-free electrons, tight binding approximation; accelerated motion of electrons and holes.
