Course Description The course will provide the basic tools for a correct approach to the problems raised by the study of performance practice. In particular, the following will be analyzed: - the databases, online resources, and bibliographic tools specific to performance practice research; - the documentation available to the researcher (scores and other musical witnesses, archival records, treatises, iconography, etc.) and its use concerning the reconstruction of performance practices; - the concept of "historically informed performance", the extremes of the authenticity debate, reflections, and current perspectives on the 'movement'; - some specific aspects of particular relevance, such as basso continuo, vocal and instrumental ornamentation, orchestral arrangements, and tuning forks. - the contribution of historical dance to the study of musical performance practice; - the praxis of the stage; - the importance of historical recordings as documents for the knowledge and reconstruction of performance practices.
