Course Title COMBUSTION AND SAFETY B
Course Type Mono-Disciplinary Course
Credits (CFU / ECTS) 6.0
Semester Second Semester
Course Description First, elementary concepts about thermo-dynamical basis, chemical kinetics, transport phenomena and turbulence are briefly recalled. Hence the different combustion regimes are analyzed, discussing the existing two-way interactions of chemistry and turbulence. The aim is to present most of basic notions about turbulent combustion, which apply to all regimes (premixed, non-premixed, partially premixed), providing the theoretical and numerical fundamentals of the turbulent combustion processes typical of most practical combustion systems, such as internal combustion or aircraft engines, industrial burners and furnaces. Then gaseous and solid pollutant formations in turbulent flames are analyzed, together with the commons techniques used for their control. Finally, the analysis of deflagration combustions in bounded volumes allows the study of accidental combustions and of main safety techniques for explosion protection and prevention.
