Course Description Inlet and exhaust process in the four-stroke engine. Quasi-steady and dynamic effects on cylinder charging. Flow through the valves: flow rates and discharge coefficients. Valve flow areas, optimum lifts and timings. Scavenging process in the two-stroke engine. Global scavenging parameters. Flow through the ports. Supercharging and turbochargers. Constant pressure and pulse turbocharging. Optimum design of the intake and exhaust pipe systems. Properties of traditional and alternative fuels. Fuel injection systems for Otto and Diesel engines. Spray atomisation and penetration. Turbulence air motion: swirl, squish and tumble. Modelling normal and abnormal combustion processes in spark ignition and compression ignition engines. Flame structure and speed. Ignition delay and mixing controlled flames. Pollutant formation mechanisms and emission control strategies. Innovative engines for eco-sustainable mobility. Noise source analysis and their control. Heat transfer to the cylinder wall. Design of water and air cooling systems. Thermal loading and main component temperatures.
