Course Title ELECTRON MICROSCOPIES
Course Type Mono-Disciplinary Course
Credits (CFU / ECTS) 5.0
Semester First Semester
Course Description Microscopy: recall of wave optics and introduction to electron optics, nanoscale information. 1) Electron beam microscopy: 1.1) Transmission Electron Microscopy by parallel beam (TEM) and by focused beam scanning (STEM);. 1.2) Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) of non-transparent samples. 2) Scanning Probe Microscopy: 2.1) Scanning Tunnel Microscopy (STM); 2.2) Scanning Force Microscopy (SFM). The four main classes of electron microscopies will serve as examples for the fundamental aspects, the information (morphology, chemical contrast, long scale and local structure, spectroscopy) and the investigation techniques exploited to obtain it, the trade-off between sensitivity and precision of the measure. The practicals will focus on few prototypical examples of state-of-the-art or historical investigations from the scientific literature.
