Course Title FUNCTIONAL MATERIALS
Course Type Mono-Disciplinary Course
Credits (CFU / ECTS) 5.0
Semester First Semester
Course Description The course aims at providing knowledge about functional, intelligent and interactive materials, and related applications. The fundamentals of pi-conjugated materials will be discussed in order to highlight the structure-to-property relationship of any class of materials here considered, and to provide the tools for the molecular engineering. The course deals with conducting and semiconducting materials for electronics and optoelectronics, photochromic materials and liquid crystals, as distinct topics. Attention is also focused on the design of devices such as LEDs, transistors, photovoltaic cells, LCDs, sensors and smart windows. The comparison with the performance of the same devices based on inorganic materials is also discussed. Finally, the most important techniques for the deposition of the organic materials into thin or patterned films are considered.
