Course Title MICROSTRUCTURAL CHARACTERISATION OF MATERIALS
Course Type Mono-Disciplinary Course
Credits (CFU / ECTS) 5.0
Semester First Semester
Course Description Characterisation techniques widely used in the field of material science will be illustrated, namely: -electronic spectroscopies (absorption spectra, reflectance, photoelectron spectroscopies) -Vibrational spectroscopies (Infrared and Raman spectroscopies, Neutron scattering) -Spin spectroscopies (NMR, ESR) -X rays diffraction -Microscopies (optical, electronic microscopies, atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) -Thermal analysis of materials. For each technique the physical principles and the methods for interpretation will be discussed. Laboratory instrumentation, sample characteristics and preparation will be illustrated. The aim of the Course is to provide a critical knowledge of the potentialities of a given technique, its field of application (e.g. the kind of materials probed and the kind of information which can be obtained). The complementarity of different techniques for a comprehensive micro-structural characterisation will be stressed.
