Course Title CORROSION ENGINEERING OF METALS AND CERAMICS
Course Type Integrated Course
Credits (CFU / ECTS) 10.0
Semester First Semester
Course Description "The course aims at describing the main corrosion problems of metals working in natural environment, as soil, seawater and atmosphere, in industrial plants and in reinforced concrete structures. The student will also become familiar with the main applications of fine ceramics, as oxides, carbides and nitrides, and will know the ceramics toughening mechanisms employed in ceramic matrix composites. The durability of ceramics at high T will be analysed. The student will be able to make a corrosion assessment on metallic materials and durability assessment on ceramic ones, evaluating the maximum expected corrosion rate and making a proper material selection for a specific application as a function the environmental aggressiveness and operation condition. During the lessons real cases will be presented. Students, divided in groups, will be asked to make a corrosion assessment, defining the cause of corrosion and indicating a proper protection system to assure a safe use in operating condition. At the end of the course, any group has to write a technical report on the proposed subject."
