Course Description Calculation of displacements of statically determined structures: Mohr's method. Structural analysis of continuous beams: force method. Structural analysis of frames: force method, mixed method and displacement method. Structural safety criteria: semi-probabilistic limit state method. Load combinations for ultimate limit states (ULS) and serviceability limit states (SLS). Partial safety factors for strength. Structural steel as a building material: mechanical properties (stiffness, strength and ductility) and main laboratory tests. Bolted and welded connections: failure modes and verification criteria. Bearing capacity checks: elastic and plastic limit moment, sectional redistribution. Instability checks on columns: omega method. Concrete as a structural material: uniaxial, biaxial behaviour and effects of lateral confinement, shrinkage, notes on linear creep phenomena. Reinforced concrete sections: experimental evidence and main assumptions. Verification of the limit states of reinforced concrete columns and beams: calculation in the cracked stage and at ultimate of sections subjected to concentric axial force, pure bending or under eccentric axial force. Shear in reinforced concrete beams: experimental evidences, comb model for beams without transverse reinforcement, variable inclination truss model for beams with transverse reinforcement.
