Programma sintetico This integrated course is made of three modules. Crisis management is a particularly complex activity, to be carried out under the stress provoked by a natural extreme, in the midst of a chaotic situation, characterised by high levels of demands on decision makers and interveners and lack of relevant information. The course Cognitive and organisational aspects of crisis management will focus on the characteristics of responding organisations and the role of the public as well as on the description of the challenging environment in which decision making in the time of crisis takes place. Case studies, illustration of seismic events that disrupted critical infrastructures are key topics throughout lessons and exercises. The second module, Geospatial data processing and mapping for crisis management, will develop advanced skills in the field of GIS and geospatial data management and mapping with the aim of tailoring such activities and their final products to the specific needs and priorities of civil protection agencies and to the vast array of stakeholders intervening in case of a seismic emergency. The students will acquire and apply knowledge on how crisis maps are produced nowadays, including enhanced tools and skills to interpret satellite images, to produce layers of exposed assets and population, comprising the possibility to exploit Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI). The third module, Earthquake phenomena: what is an earthquake? Different types of measures of an earthquake; Seismic hazard: definition, parameters, seismic catalogue, assessment methodologies, standard software, reference earthquakes for seismic scenarios. Site effects: Lithological and morphological amplifications: definition, data, assessment methodologies, standard software, application to a case study; slope instability under seismic actions: definition, assessment methodologies, standard software. Seismic vulnerability of buildings: definition, assessment methodologies. Seismic vulnerability of lifelines: definition, assessment methodologies, results. Seismic vulnerability of special buildings (e.g. churches, castle, etc): definition, assessment methodologies, examples. Seismic risk: definition and evaluation methods. Seismic scenarios: definition and evaluation methods. Post-earthquake Usability assessment: assessment organization and methodology based on the AEDES form. Seminaries about seismic emergency management (together with the other two courses of the ITEM module) held by regional and civil protection officers and by firemen.
