Course Title AIR POLLUTION AND CONTROL ENGINEERING
Course Type Mono-Disciplinary Course
Credits (CFU / ECTS) 10.0
Semester First Semester
Course Description The course is dedicated to the main engineering aspects involved in the field of air quality remediation and maintenance, with specific emphasis on all the related implications arising from energy production and conversion processes. Lecture contents are organised as to first give a general perspective on air quality, through the illustration of all the fundamental processes and characteristics of the pollution phenomena at the different scales of interest, the nature and effects of the pollutants and the main principles behind regulatory issues. Atmospheric emission sources are then examined and analysed with respect to the main phenomena affecting the generation of pollutants, to process and design variables related effects and to the whole issues related to their quantitative evaluation: particular attention will be devoted to stationary and mobile energy production activities, addressed in terms of all the different aspects that play a role in their qualitative and quantitative emissions budget (type of fuel, engineering configuration, process design options). The rest of the course is dedicated to the engineering of emission control processes, with a detailed examination of the base principles forestanding source reduction alternatives and removal operations and the engineering aspects involved in their practical design and operation and in the evaluation of their removal capabilities and full scale potential applications.
