Course Title BIO-ENERGY AND WASTE-TO-ENERGY TECHNOLOGIES (I.C.)
Course Type Integrated Course
Credits (CFU / ECTS) 10.0
Semester First Semester
Course Description The course focuses on the environmental and engineering aspects of energy production from biomass and waste materials. After giving the general perspective on the raw materials applicable as feedstock in bio-energy and waste-to-energy systems, different energy conversion routes and technologies for biomass, biofuels, waste and waste derived fuels are presented. Process and engineering aspects of direct and indirect energy production from biomass, waste and waste derived fuels (thermochemical, mechanical and biological conversion routes), as well as from biofuels in the transport sector, are critically compared on the basis of energy and environmental balances, and by adopting the Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach. The main economic aspects of bio-energy and waste-to-energy technologies are discussed, as well as a general methodology to assess their profitability.
