Course Description Analysis and optimization of thermodynamic processes, of their efficiency and of the cost of energy produced. Thermodynamic cycle, technology assessment, design aspects of main components, fuels used, off-design analysis and influence of operating conditions for power stations based on: (i) steam cycles, (ii) gas turbines, (iii) gas-steam combined cycles. Cogeneration: energy savings, evaluation indexes, plant technologies, operating curves, economic feasibility. Units of measure of pollutant concentration within gaseous streams. Mechanisms of formation and depletion of NO and CO in combustion processes. Removal from exhaust gases (denitrification, desulfurization, particulate removal). Techniques for a clean utilization of heavy fuels and solid wastes (gasification of coal and refinery residuals, urban wastes incineration). The effects of refrigerant fluids on ozone depletion and greenhouse effect. Heat rejection towards the ambient (water open loops, dry cooling, evaporative cooling).
