Course Description Radioactivity - Elements of special relativity: Lorentz transformation, relativistic mechanics and mass-energy equivalence. Wave-particle dualism, De Broglie wavelength and uncertainty principle. An outline of quantum mechanics: wave function, Schr÷dinger equation and applications. Microscopic structure of matter: simplified atomic model and liquid drop model of nucleus. Radioactivity: radioactivity decay law and characteristic quantities. Main decay mode: α and β decay, nuclear disexcitation, detection techniques and main applications. Nuclear reactions: reaction Q-value, macroscopic and microscopic cross section. Main reaction induced by thermal, epithermal and fast neutrons. Reaction induced by charged particles, especially nuclear fusion. Radiation Protection - The aim is to give the basic principles of the radiation protection. In the course the physical quantities of interest and their units will be described. Being all the radiation effects on man derived from the interactions with matter, these interactions will be analyzed in detail as functions of the radiation quality and of the materials. Some hours will be spent for the description of the main instruments and the dosemeters. Finally, the techniques for the workers dose control and reduction and the national regulations will be explained.
