Course Description Brief description of the subjects The course provides the basic knowledge for the selection, the management and, at least at a limited degree, the design of machine tools used in modern manufacturing systems. For this purpose, the topics of the course move from the relevant technological background and cover the main technical problems related to machine tools. After an overview of the reference industrial context, the general architecture of machine tools is treated. This is first analyzed at the level of single motion elements (machine axes), and then synthesized through the classification of machine configurations (general-purpose, special, parallel kinematics). Criteria are also provided for the choice of the proper configuration according to production needs. The main subsystems of machine tools are then studied. These include frames, guideways and bearings, transmission drives, position sensors, motors, feed-drives and hydraulic drive units. For each elements, the main issues related to selection and design are treated and exemplified in exercises based on technical documentation of commercial components. The problem of controlling the different machine functions is treated with special focus on both the computer numerical control (with related ISO and CAM programming) and the PLC-based automation. Exercises are planned also in this phase with the objective of allowing the use of available control systems. Other addressed topics include performances of machine tools (with the related evaluation and inspection) and safety problems (within the general Machinery Directive). Synthesis of the subjects Reference context: Italian machine tool industry, background on machining processes. Architecture of machines and systems: motion, machine axes, configurations (general-purpose, special, parallel), evaluation and comparison. Subsystems of machine tools: frames, guideways and bearings, transmission drives, position sensors, motors, feed-drives, hydraulic drive units. Motion control: computer numerical control, programmable logic controllers and related programming. Evaluation of machine performances: process capability, precision, inspection. Safety-related standards.
