Course Description This course presents the main devices used for the generation, transmission and detection of information in the areas of widest interest in information and communication technologies. The physical principles and the electromagnetic aspects underlying the operation of sources, modulators, filters, amplifiers and receivers operating at radiofrequency and optical frequencies are introduced, and the photonic and microwave technologies currently used for the realization of these devices are illustrated. The main issues related to guided wave (metal and dielectric waveguides) and radiated (antennas) electromagnetic fields are discussed, and their exploitation for the implementation of passive and active devices is presented. The course illustrates the characteristic parameters and the functional scheme of the presented devices, together with the requirements for their use in data transmission systems. Particular attention is given to issues related to energy consumption and to the scaling up of the amount of information, pointing out the theoretical, technological and physical limits. The overall goal of the course is to provide a comprehensive overview of the transmission technologies employed for interconnections, from very short to very long distances.
