Course Description The course will focus on Internet architectures and communication technologies. The students will learn how and why the Internet works like it does, further going into the details of the design choices the Internet is based on. The course will follow an "hands-on" approach building up on several practical examples to let the students see how theoretical concepts are working in practice. Always in the hands-on spirit, software tools for network design and performance evaluation will be used throughout the course. The course will start off by presenting the foundations of computer networks and communication protocols, moving then to some fundamental principles of communication systems; the student will learn how the information is "manipulated" in order to be transferred through the Internet and which are the metrics used to evaluate the performances of a communication systems and a communication network in general. The Internet protocol stack will be illustrated using a top-down approach, starting from the application layer (the most visible to the final user) and then going down through the transport layer, the network layer and the network access layer. The last part of the course will be dedicated to private networks and Intranets
