Course Description The course treats the fundamental bases of energy systems (thermodynamic laws and heat transfer). The main goal of the course is to explain and discuss the theoretical tools that are necessary to describe a thermodynamic system through the use of mass and energy balance. These theoretical tools are used to study energy conversion systems (particularly for electricity generation). Fundamentals of thermodynamic: Conservation laws in open systems. Properties of substances (ideal gas, real gas). Introduction to fluidynamic: Flow regime (laminar, turbulent), pressure drop estimation. Flow characteristics of compressible fluids. Heat transfer: Introduction to heat transfer mechanisms (conduction, convection, radiative heat transfer). Meaning of characteristic dimensionless numbers. Application of theoretical tools to specific case studies . Thermodynamic cycles and power conversion technologies: Introduction about thermodynamic cycle for power generation (efficiency indexes, cycle characteristics).
