Course Description Basic concepts of mechanics of a continuous medium: stress tensor, small strain tensor and related properties. Classical elasticity, isotropy, the elastic potential function, Clapeyron's theorem. Existence ed uniqueness of the solution of the elastic problem. Equation of the elastic curve: determination of displacements and redundants. Basic concepts on the stability of the elastic equilibrium: the static method for the determination of the critical load. Euler's formula for pin-ended columns; effect of other end conditions. The principle of virtual work in the structural analysis: the force method for the determination of displacements and redundants. Effect of constraint settlements and thermal variations. Influence coefficients. Energy theorems in structural analysis: Clapeyron, Betti, Maxwell. The displacement method: the stiffness matrix of the beam element, assembly of the structural stiffness matrix. The adoption of the displacement method in the finite element procedures adopted by the modern codes of structural analysis.
