Course Description 1. Feedstocks and production cycles of the organic chemical industry. Synthesis of methanol and of higher alcohols. Acetic acid. Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis. MTG and MTO processes. Introduction to the petroleum and petrochemical industry. Refinery processes (topping, cracking, reforming, fractionation of hydrocarbon mixtures). Production of light olefins by steam cracking. Monomers for plastic materials. Examples of selective oxidation processes. Polimerization processes. 2. Homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis. Industrial reactors. General criteria for the separation of mixtures. Safety criteria. Pollution issues. Process development: scales, equipment, criteria. Process intensification. Introuction to the economic evaluation of industrial chemical processes.
