Semester Second Semester
Course Description The aim of the course is to introduce security aspects in communication networks and the Internet, providing a broad overview of cryptography protocols and systems for secure communication on the network. After an introduction to the theoretical bases of cryptography and the theory of numbers (mathematics of integers or discrete mathematics), the most important encryption algorithms are presented both symmetric and based on public key. Then, authentication methods and protocols are presented for messages and users, based on hash functions, electronic signatures, Challenge and Response protocols, passwords, certificates, as well as protocols for establishing and distributing encryption keys. Finally, protocols for the security of communication on the Internet, at the application, transport, and network level are illustrated. The course will be enriched by monographic seminars on specific network security issues, held by industry experts or telecommunications operators. All course topics are addressed by providing the necessary mathematical theoretical culture, but always emphasizing the practical and applicative aspects of greater relevance.
