Course Description The course aims to provide an advanced knowledge and suitable tools to analyze the buildings energy performance while maintaining indoor comfort as today expected. Such knowledge and tools will permit the students to investigate autonomously on the achievement and maintenance over the time of comfort and energy performances for any building and service system configuration. The course particularly will focus on optimization of both the building envelope and the service systems from the energy and economic point of view. This will be achieved through the use of high efficiency conventional technologies (thermal driven heat pumps, heat recovery systems, etc.) and of renewable energy systems as thermal and/or PV solar systems, biomass and geothermal systems. Moreover in the second section of the course the student will face the distribution of solar energy and the limitations that this places on the performance of solar energy systems; comprehend the importance of materials and losses components and in the systems performance; and have knowledge and skill in solar systems selection and design methods. That will be achieved through topics covering nature and availability of solar radiation; radiation estimations and measuring instruments; materials for solar energy utilization, radiative properties and thermal transport properties; introduction to non-concentrating and concentrating collectors, design techniques and performance estimation; solar component and solar system operational characteristics; economics analysis and environmental impact. Synthesis of the subjects Energy balance in bbuildings; HVAC systems in residential and tertiary buildings; Integration of HVAC and bulding envelope technologies. Solar thermal collectors; Solar thermal systems for DHW, heating and cooling.
