Course Description The course Advanced Mathematical Methods is constituted by two modules of 5 CFU each, namely "Functional analysis and Numerics for PDEs" and "Numerical Methods for Optimization". Objectives and contents of the module "Functional analysis and Numerics for PDEs" Solving optimization problems subject to constraints given in terms of partial differential equations (PDEs) with additional constraints on the controls and/or states is one of the most challenging problems in the context of industrial, economical and engineering applications. For the treatment of such optimization problems the interaction of optimization techniques and numerical simulation plays a central role. The objective of the course is to introduce the mathematical field of optimization with PDE constraints and present different optimization strategies, tailored to specific problem, for the verification of the optimization algorithms. Objectives and contents of the module "Numerical Methods for Optimization" The course offers an introduction to linear and discrete optimization. It covers the use of mathematical programming as a means to solve real-world decision-making problems. The course is centered upon presenting and formulating optimization models and solution algorithms (such as simplex method, Branch & Bound, cutting plane method, heuristics and metaheuristics) that fit a wide a variety of applications in engineering, with special attention towards energy applications. The course is accompanied by computer laboratory sessions, which use AMPL modeling language and state-of-the art commercial solvers to tackle optimization problems arising in a variety of fields of application.
