Course Description At first fundamental principles to study the fluid machines such as conservation equations, energy balances in closed and open systems are provided. Working fluid properties, fundamental of aerodynamics and compressible flows will be also introduced. Afterwards the course will deal with the analysis of the operation of IC engines taking into account the main processes governing performance, efficiency, pollutant formation and control. Techniques currently employed to increase engine efficiency will be also taught. The last part of the course will go into details of turbomachines. In particular, aspects related to flow, operation and control of axial and radial flow turbomachines will be discussed. Specific modules are also included to describe in detail machines operating renewable energy powerplants: hydraulic and wind turbines.
