Course Description Vehicle modeling and simulation: three-dimensional rigid body dynamics, finite rotations and their parameterization, reference frames; modeling of aerodynamic and propulsive forces, flight mechanics equations of motion; integration methods and simulation of flight; motion primitives, maneuvers and trimmed flight conditions; linearization: small perturbance theory, analysis of linear systems, longitudinal/latero-directional decoupling, linearized equations of motion, stability and control derivatives. Stability: longitudinal static stability and control, latero-directional static stability and control, stick free and stick fixed analysis, control forces; dynamic stability and response: longitudinal dynamic stability, fugoid and short period modes, longitudinal approximations, latero-directional dynamic stability, roll, spiral and dutch-roll modes, latero-directional approximations; inertial couplings and spin, stability and control at high angles of attack. Control: handling qualities, architecture of flight control systems, design and synthesis of flight control laws; stability augmentation systems, auto-pilots, trajectory control systems, gust and load alleviation systems. Model identification from flight test data: introduction, flight testing, instrumentation and measurements, data pre-processing; time domain methods (output error, filter error, equation error, filtering), frequency domain methods (brief overview), identification of unstable vehicles; model validation.
