Course Title SENSOR SYSTEMS
Course Type Mono-Disciplinary Course
Credits (CFU / ECTS) 5.0
Semester First Semester
Course Description The course provides the basis for understanding how to acquire signals from sensors (such as image, temperature, magnetic field, strain and force gauges, displacement, touch, distance and proximity ones, microphones, and MEMS among others) and how to design analog and digital front-end circuits and microprocessor routines. Students will become familiar with the data-sheets of sensors and electronic components and also with some representative software tools to simulate analog circuits and to program and debug ARM-Cortex microcontrollers. By means of hands-on activities (both in class and at home), each student will practice with his own microcontroller board (supplied by the teacher), equipped with main internal peripherals (e.g., GPIO, SPI, I2C, USART, PWM, ADC) and a broad set of on-board sensors, will develop the firmware for proper hardware settings, signal acquisition, and data read-out, and will test the conceived embedded system. At the end of the course, M.S. students will be able to select the best sensor for a specific application, to conceive the optimized front-end circuitry, and to effectively interface both to high-end microcontrollers.
