Course Title COMPLEX SYSTEMS AND NETWORKS
Course Type Mono-Disciplinary Course
Credits (CFU / ECTS) 5.0
Semester First Semester(Second Half-semester)
Course Description The aim of the course is to present methods and algorithms for the analysis of complex systems, that are systems composed by a large number of interacting units. Examples include transportation systems, infrastructure networks for the delivery of matter, energy or information, the networks of financial transactions, biological interaction networks (e.g. proteins and metabolic processes), ecosystems and coordinated fleets of (natural or artificial) agents, the social networks. The course first illustrates the tools of analysis to characterize complex dynamical systems, with particular focus on those showing a deterministic chaotic behavior. Then, the structure of connections between systems is considered and, finally, the collective dynamical phenomena emerging because of the interaction network are analyzed, such as the synchronization of oscillations. The theoretical notions are illustrated by means of cross-disciplinary examples in the fields of engineering, economics and social sciences.
