Course Description The course covers the basic principles of electromagnetism necessary to deeply understand the various types of transmission media typically used in ICT. The course starts with a survey on time-dependent electromagnetic fields, Maxwell's equations, propagation and radiation of electromagnetic waves. Then, the most common transmission media are considered: copper wires and cables (twisted pairs), optical fibers, waveguides, antennas and propagation of waves in free space (WiFi). The requirements from the signal transmission point of view, properties, potentials and limits of transmission media are presented and compared in the actual applicative scenario in the ICT. The emphasis is on physical phenomena and applications.
