Course Description Basic principles of guided optics. Materials and fabrication techniques for integrated optics. The main integrated-optics components of an optical communication system: couplers, filters, modulators, add-drop devices, dispersion compensators. Techniques for the characterization of integrated-optics devices. Silicon photonics. From macrooptics to microoptics: optical functions and their implementation. Refractive and diffractive microoptics: basic principles. Microoptical components: types and functions, fabrication and characterization techniques. Microoptical systems: MOEMS for optical systems integration; micro-optofluidics. Nanooptics: how to overcome diffraction limit; near-field microscopy. Photonic crystals: basic principles and examples of devices.
