Course Title MECHANICAL BEHAVIOUR AND FAILURE OF METALS
Course Type Integrated Course
Credits (CFU / ECTS) 10.0
Semester First Semester
Course Description "The course is composed of two modules, Mechanical Behaviour of Materials and Failure and control of metals. The first module focusses on the basic knowledge of mechanical design. The main topics refer to the assessment of mechanical components subjected to static and fatigue loadings in presence of geometrical and material-related discontinuities. In particular, the presence and acceptability of cracks and/or defects is assessed by means of Fracture Mechanics basic concepts. Non isotropic composite materials are introduced, following a design perspective too. Practical cases from several engineering fields are approached by means of numerical strategies (use of finite element software). The second module is about the main failure mechanisms and causes encountered in metals subjected to loads under specific environmental conditions. The general topics concern ductile and brittle fracture mechanism, damage by fatigue damage and creep, embrittlement mechanisms, effects of residual stresses and methods for their evaluation, typical defects found in products depending on their manufacturing routes (casting, welding, hot deformation, cold forming, thermal treatments and coatings). Finally, non destructive testing methods will be discussed."
