Course Description The course will describe the behavior of materials (with greater attention to metals) exposed to aggressive environments, used in chemical plants, petrochemical industry. Both design phase and operation condition will be considered. The main classes of materials are considered in relation to their use in real working condition. The fundamental concepts related to the mechanisms of damage in operation, with reference to fracture mechanics and degradation phenomena, are discussed. The course will give information useful in both the design phase (material selection and use of prevention techniques), as well as in monitoring and inspection real systems, with particular reference to NDT, i.e. non-destructive techniques. Finally, RBI will be briefly introduce in order to define the risk matrix to obtain the priorities of intervention.
