Course Description Topology of Euclidean spaces. Metric spaces. Equations and systems of ordinary differential equations. Local and global existence and uniqueness for the Cauchy problem. Continuous dependence on data. Types of explicitly solvable equations. Linear equations and systems. Superposition principle. Linear systems with constant coefficients: exponential matrix. First order partial differential equations: transport equation. Method of characteristics. Second order partial differential equations: classification in elliptic, parabolic, hyperbolic equations. Well posed problems. Partial differential equations of particular type: Laplace, heat, wave equations. Classical solutions. Green and Riemann functions, separation of variables. Introduction to Banach and Hilbert spaces. Weak solutions to a PDE. Introduction to calculus of variations. For students in Civil Engineering: Infinite series: convergence tests. Series of functions: pointwise and uniform convergence, limit, integration and differentiation of series. Power series, exponential function in the complex field. For students in Environmental Engineering: Boundary value problems. Linear and non linear (2-dimensional) autonomous systems. Qualitative and quantitative study of orbits. Stability, linearization, Lyapunov functions.
