Course Title NUMERICAL ANALYSIS
Course Type Mono-Disciplinary Course
Credits (CFU / ECTS) 6.0
Semester First Semester
Course Description The course provides an introduction to numerical approximation, error analysis and computational methods that represent the main constituents of Numerical Mathematics. The motivating example is the initial value/boundary value problem describing in one spatial dimension temperature and heat flux in a bar under the action of externally applied forces and of distributed sources/sinks of heat. Considered topics include: polynomial approximation of functions and data; approximation of integrals through numerical quadratures; numerical solution of ordinary differential equations; numerical solution of linear algebraic systems. These methods are applied in the Galerkin Finite Element Method for the numerical approximation of elliptic and parabolic partial differential equations in one spatial dimension. Theoretical concepts, methods and algorithms will be numerically verified in laboratory hands-on sessions on the computer, conducted using the Matlab scientific environment.
