Course Title FOUNDATIONS OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING
Course Type Mono-Disciplinary Course
Credits (CFU / ECTS) 7.0
Semester First Semester
Course Description Current, voltage, power and energy. Electric circuits, two-terminal and n-terminal elements. Kirchhoff's current and voltage laws, conservation of energy. Resistive circuits: linear resistor, short circuit, open circuit, ideal and non-ideal voltage and current sources, ideal transformer. Equivalence of two-terminal elements. Series and parallel connections. Delta and Y connections. Voltage and current dividers. Transformation of non-ideal sources. Maximum power transfer. Linear circuits: superposition theorem, Thévenin-Norton theorem. Node analysis: node-to-datum voltages, formulation of node equations. Non-linear circuits: non-linear resistor, diode. Dynamic circuits: capacitor and inductor, transient and steady-state response of first-order circuits. Sinusoidal steady state: phasors, impedance and admittance, network functions, resonant circuits. Powers in the sinusoidal steady state: instantaneous power, mean power, reactive power, complex power. Power factor and its correction. Three-phase systems: balanced and unbalanced three-phase circuits, circuits with neutral conductor, powers. Basic concepts of electric-power distribution and industrial exploitation of the electric energy.
