Credits (CFU / ECTS) 5.0
Semester Second Semester
Course Description Fundamentals of Solid Mechanics. Stress, strain, elastic body, linear elasticity, solution of special problems, principle of virtual works for beam systems and 3D bodies. Elastic-plastic constitutive law: 1D case. Perfectly plastic behaviour, work-hardening behaviour. Elastic-perfectly plastic beams in bending: the concept of plastic hinge. Examples of step-by-step analyses of frames. Beams subjected to axial force and bending moment: M-N interaction domains for symmetric sections. Elastic-plastic constitutive law: 3D case. Rate form for the elastic-plastic constitutive law in 3D; Guest-Tresca and von Mises yield criteria; standard plasticity: normality rule. Solution of special problems of solid mechanics in the elastic-plastic domain. Theory of Limit Analysis. The concept of failure mechanism; the static and kinematic theorems of limit analysis and their consequences. Manual methods to estimate the bearing capacity of elastic-plastic frames. Methods based on Linear Programming: static and kinematic formulations. Limit analysis of elastic-perfectly plastic 3D bodies: an outline.
